Twin Cities Amazons Rugby Club Look Ahead to Fall 2018 Competition

June 1, 2018

The 2018 Fall match is coming up fast this season with an earlier start than previous years. The only difference for Fall is the season shifting a couple weeks earlier. Both DII and WPL sides will have the same amount of matches.

In previous years, Fall practices have started in August. For 2018 practices will tentatively be starting the week of July 17, with matches for both DII and WPL sides starting on the weekend of August 18-19. The 2018 WPL playoffs will be October 25-28 in Atlanta, GA this year, compared to the second weekend of November in previous years.

According to USA Rugby [https://www.usarugby.org/2018/05/wpl-schedule-released/], the reason for the slight timing shift in the schedule was to allow for the promotion of high level play and competition in women’s rugby. “To allow for the members of the Women’s National Team to compete in WPL, Championships has been moved earlier by a couple weeks to accommodate the exciting upcoming assemblies and matches planned for the Eagles including a match against the Black Ferns as a part of The Rugby Weekend [https://www.therugbyweekend.com/] November 3rd and a match against Ireland November 18th [https://www.usarugby.org/2018/05/w15-v-ireland-2018/].”

A quick recap on the results from the Fall 2017 competitive season, the Amazons WPL side placed 6th at the 2017 WPL playoffs. The DII side placed first in the Midwest DII West 2 division.

The WPL consists of ten teams from coast to coast that are split into two five-team conferences (Blue and Red Conferences). An eight-game regular season is followed by tournament play for the USA Rugby WPL National Championship title each fall. As part of the Red Conference, the WPL side competes against the Atlanta Harlequins, New York Rugby Club, D.C. Furies, and Beantown.

The DII side competes in the Midwest Union, which is divided into four divisions. After playing each team in one’s division (both at home and away), the winning club in each region advances to regional playoffs. As part of the Midwest DII West division, the DII side previously competed against Milwaukee Scylla, Palmer College Dragons, Minneapolis Menagerie, and County Will Morrigans in the 2017 season.

Most importantly, the Fall 2018 match schedule was recently released by USA Rugby and the Women’s Premier League. DII side’s match schedule will also be released once details are finalized.
