Ali Gillberg (Hometown: Drummond, WI) and Kaelene Lundstrum (Hometown: Bird Island, MN) from the Twin Cities Amazons will be competing on behalf of the East for the Women’s Premier League All-Star Match in Denver, Colorado on July 28. The selection of our Amazons as All-Star players showcases they are the best of the best chosen through a process of nominations by coaching staff from the league.
Gillberg makes her second appearance this year for the WPL All-Star Match. She has been a consistent starter for the Amazons for over 5 years, starting her commitment to the Zons after she graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in 2010. Prior to her years with the Zons, Gillberg represented Minnesota on the U23 select side and has also appeared in the Women’s select side for Wisconsin.
Lundstrum, who is a 2010 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, will be making her debut at the 2018 WPL All Star Match. On top of being a consistent starter for the Amazons since 2010, she is a capped USA Eagle for both the US 7’s and 15’s teams. She has also participated on several select teams ranging from Midwest Selects for 7’s and 15’s, Atlantis 7’s, Scion 7’s, and Stars 7’s.
Gillberg offered some insight on the history of the WPL All Stars matches, “Last year, the All-Star Match was a great time and an awesome opportunity to play the women’s national team just before they left for the World Cup. This year will be a little different since it’s East vs. West, but it is a cool opportunity to compete at a high level.”
Lundstrum also adds, “Select teams are always a great opportunity to learn more about the game and get different perspectives from other high level players and coaches.”
Competing at a higher level allows our players to bring their experience back to our Zons community and grow the game. Both players are excited to represent the Zons and the East conference in this opportunity and we are proud to have them represent our team.
