Match Report: WPL Amazons VS. D.C. Furies, D2 Amazons VS. Chicago Lions

August 22, 2018

The Twin Cities Amazons kicked off the 2018 Fall season with DII playing against the Chicago Lions at home this past Saturday and WPL traveling to the DC Furies for their match on Sunday.

Last year, the away match against the DC Furies resulted in a 36-7 win for the Amazons. This year, the away match ended in a close 31-33 loss for the Zons.

Forward and long time vet Mikayla Miller shared a quick recap, “Our goals for Sunday’s WPL match were to go forward together, and to ‘protect the pack’ – protect our family, control our controllables, and move down the field together. Our first half was filled with great defensive efforts and explosive moments on attack, which sent us into  halftime with a lead. With a strong attack and a relentless pursuit at the breakdown, the momentum quickly shifted in the Furies favor during the second half though, ending in a close loss for us on the road. While the loss was disappointing, we recognize our potential, and are excited to get back to training this week to prepare for our next couple of matches – our first DII road game and WPL home opener.”

For the DII side, the match was a debut for the Chicago Lions that resulted in a 19-43 loss for the Zons.

Field Captain Ashley Kastendick provided comment on DII’s performance on Saturday, “I don’t think the score reflects the hard fought battle the DII Amazons gave the Lions. The individual efforts were there but at the end of the day, we know that we lacked that team connection and got out worked. With that being said, you could definitely feel the potential out there on the pitch. I’m excited to watch this squad tap into that and go forward as the season progresses.”

While DII is currently sitting at 0 points for league standings from this past weekend, WPL harnessed two league bonus points for scoring 4 or more tries in a match and a loss within 7 points.

As the Amazons go forward to the next weekend of competition, DII will be at the Will County Morrigans on Saturday, Aug. 25 and WPL will be playing Beantown at home on Sunday, Aug. 26.
