Twin Cities Amazons Rugby Club Joins USA Rugby Women’s Division 1
Minneapolis, MN – [2/23/25] – The Twin Cities Amazons Rugby Club is proud to announce its official transition to USA Rugby Women’s Division 1 for the upcoming season. This move marks a significant milestone in the club’s storied history, reinforcing its commitment to providing quality competitive and player development opportunities for its members.
Founded in 1982, the Amazons have long been a pillar of women’s rugby in the United States, fostering talent and competing at the highest levels of the sport. Formerly competing in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the Amazons have made the decision to join Division 1, a move that will allow the club to continue its tradition of excellence while embracing new opportunities for growth and regional competition.
“It’s an exciting time for our club! We were a part of the WPL since 2009, and now that WER has come to life - with Amazons leading there too - we’re moving into a new era. We have the opportunity to support athletes who are striving to play professionally, while providing a D1 and D2 experience for anyone who wants to play. This spring, you’ll see us return to our touring roots with our first international travel in a long time.
Being a WPL club, I think we return to D1 with the privilege of pressure to make an impact, and I couldn’t be more happy to be helping lead this incredible group.” Head coach Xane Gerasimo says.
The Amazons will compete against other Division 1 teams in the Midwest, bringing their rich legacy and competitive spirit to a new stage. The club remains committed to its core values of inclusivity, development, and excellence, ensuring that it continues to be a respected destination for rugby athletes in the Midwest and beyond. Additionally, the Amazons plan to continue to support a D2 team, providing development opportunities for emerging players and ensuring a strong pathway for athletes at all levels.
“I am really excited for what this upcoming season brings for the Amazons as we look towards the transition into D1,” current athlete Anna Watry says. “I think that there are a lot of new and exciting opportunities for our club to continue to grow and play against a high level of competition.”
The upcoming season promises thrilling matchups, and the Amazons encourage fans, supporters, and aspiring players to join them in this next chapter. More information on schedules, roster updates, and community events will be shared in the coming weeks.
